2. Intro to CLB

Joanne Pettis - October 25th, 2008

An overview and introduction to the Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000 document, video samples of individuals of different benchmark levels, as well as writing samples from the different benchmark levels.

3. Task-based Instruction

A presentation discussing the key terms and concepts of ALT, language assessment, theme-based language tasks as well as implications for instruction.

4. Willingness to Communicate

Dr. Peter MacIntyre - November 28th, 2008

The keynote presentation from the 2008 ALT Branch Fall Conference. This presentation discusses second language communication and practical solutions in fostering a willingness to communicate among individuals in a social context.

8. Language Assessment

With content focused on language assessment, Joanne talks about the importance of using rubrics, picture stories, and the differences that should exist between learning tools and assessment tools.

9. Teaching Multilevel Classes

Using her own experiences as an adult EAL instructor in St. Vital, Ann and the audience talk about the challenges of working with multiple learning levels within a single class, how to overcome these challenges, and how to create a community within a classroom of multilevel learners.

10. Collaborative Language Portfolio Assessment

During this presentation, Jo-Anne Schick talks about methods of instruction of language portfolios, how to work with EAL students on their portfolios, and how to encourage students to keep up on their portfolios after their program is complete.

11. Teaching Grammar In Context

With real world examples and evidence from her experience, Gail Tiessen discusses teaching methods of grammar for EAL students.
